Things to do to enhance our environment, slowing the global warming cycle, and creating hope for the future…

1. The White Roof Project: Lighten your roof’’s color, compensate for the melting white ice caps and glaciers by creating more white to reflect the sun…

“Warming trends could greatly affect ocean processes, which, in turn, impact Arctic and global climate, said Michael Steele, senior oceanographer at the University of Washington, Seattle. Liquid water absorbs the Sun's energy rather than reflecting it into the atmosphere the way ice does. As the oceans warm and ice thins, more solar energy is absorbed by the water, creating positive feedbacks that lead to further melting. Such dynamics can change the temperature of ocean layers, impact ocean circulation and salinity, change marine habitats, and widen shipping lanes, Steele said.

So…painting a dark roof white changes the area from an absorbing area to a reflective area, reducing the heat, during the entire sunlight part of the day, 365 days a year.

2. Grow Food: Grow some of your own food, eat from the land…even wild foods like Lambs quarter can be eaten, plant fruit trees, etc.
3. Compost. Often compost green waste picked up by cities goes to landfills to cover the trash, and does not make it back to the soil.
4. Minimize Concrete: If possible, take concrete out of your propert Concrete, creates more heat than soil, THE EARTH NEEDS TO BREATHE! So you might consider removing your driveway and planting a garden. Use stepping stones so there is more exposed earth.
5. Minimize Power Usage: Use power strips and turn off equipment when not in use.
6. Replace Light Bulbs: Replace incandescent bulbs with energy saving fluorescents. Incandescent bulbs create 90% hear and only 10 % light.
7. Bicycle, Walk: Ride a bicycle as much as possible, and walk
8. Buy electric cars/ hybrids, fuel cell, or other non-oil alternatives or hybrid alternatives when possible.
9. Go Solar: Put up Solar panels and use solar energy
10. Use The Wind and Water: Put up a small wind mill and use wind energy, or even hydroelectric if you live in a water area and create energy by installing a turbine to be charged by running stream or heavy rainfall.
